Summary
This article provides instructions for checking and limiting how much network bandwidth your cameras use. To do this, you must be an administrator.
Managing Camera Bandwidth
Checking Bitrates
To start, check if any cameras are using too much bandwidth:
- Log in to Cloud Portal.
- Navigate to OnCloud.
-
Click the Building icon at the top right.
NOTE: If you do not see this icon, you do not have permission to view the dashboard.
- Click Reports at the top.
- Scroll down to the Camera Average Streaming Bitrate section.
- Click View Details to see the detailed bitrate report.
- Click the dropdowns at the top to customize the data.
-
All Cameras - filters by location, area, and camera
-
Past 7 Days - changes the time period for the graph
-
Day - changes the averaging period for each data point
-
All Cameras - filters by location, area, and camera
- Click Average Bitrate until the chevron points down.
This sorts the list to show which cameras have the highest average bitrates.
- If there is a camera using too much bandwidth, note the name and location.
Changing Video Settings for a Camera
Reduce bandwidth by managing how a camera compresses video:
- In OnCloud, click Cameras in the top menu.
- Click the three dots beside a camera, then click Camera Settings.
- Click Video Settings.
- To reduce bandwidth, toggle the switch beside any of these settings to ON.
-
Wisestream - manages the compression rate based on whether objects are detected (such as people or vehicles)
-
Dynamic GOV - manages the number of frames used in compression based on whether motion is detected.
-
Dynamic FPS - manages the number of frames per second (FPS) based on whether motion is detected.
NOTES: If you turn on Dynamic FPS, click and drag the slider to set
the minimum number of frames to stream per second.
These settings work best to reduce bandwidth if you enable all of them together.
-
Wisestream - manages the compression rate based on whether objects are detected (such as people or vehicles)
Changing Network Settings for a Camera
Reduce bandwidth by managing how a camera uses the network:
- In OnCloud, click Cameras in the top menu.
- Click the three dots beside a camera, then click Camera Settings.
- Click Network.
- To only record video from the camera when an event is detected, toggle the switch beside Record Only Events to ON.
- To see which events are detected, click Analytics Settings.
- To set a bandwidth limit, click Set a Maximum Streaming Bitrate.
- Click Continue.
- Click and drag the slider to set a maximum bitrate, select the days of the week and time range for the limit, then click Add.
You can add up to three bitrate limits for a camera.
